Yuji Ueno
1967年、京都府向日市に生まれる。10歳から18歳まで両親の故郷・鹿児島で過ごし、豊かな自然や土地の営みに親しむ。19歳でいけばなを始め、勅使河原宏による竹のインスタレーションに衝撃を受け、その精神と空間構成の大胆さに深く影響を受ける。
2003年、東京・茅場町のギャラリーマキにて、オーナー坂巻氏の勧めで即興的な花のライブパフォーマンスを開始。以降、花をいける行為そのものを舞台芸術として捉え、音楽、舞踏、現代美術など多彩な分野のアーティストと国内外で共演。
2011年、東日本大震災の年に「花いけバトル」を創設し、観客参加型の即興いけばなを提示。2017年に主催を退いた後も、自らの理念を反映した「Back to Back」形式のパフォーマンスを継続し、表現の限界を探り続けている。
現在は軽井沢を拠点に、命・時間・空間が交差する一瞬を探し求める花道家として活動を続けている。

Born in Kyoto, Japan, in 1967, UENO is a flower arranger and artist, who’s currently based in Tokyo. In 1986, He encountered Hiroshi Teshigawara’s avant-garde works of ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement, and decided to pursue the world of floral art. Since he started teaching ikebana in 2004, he has dedicated himself to imparting the knowledge of “what makes beautiful flower arrangement, what makes good flower arrangement,” to his students, while continuing his own quest to explore further in the art of flower arrangement internationally. He has put together the live performances titled “hanaike” in 2005, and has also hosted the event “Flower Battles,” the competition, in which flower arrangers perform live in front of an audience. At KENPOKU ART 2016, he incorporated 3D printers, while still maintaining the essence of flower arrangement. His creative activities have extended to places such as Bali and Thailand, and to numerous collaborations with craftspeople and musicians.
