ジョン・ヘリョンは、空間の特性や素材の質感（物質性）に関心を持ち、現地で集めた廃材や捨てられたものを活用し、その場所ならではの特徴を生かした作品制作を行っている。彼女は実際に現場に滞在し、場所を丹念に探索しながら素材を収集し、その過程で出会った人々との対話を通して得たインスピレーションをもとに、土地に潜む物語を紡ぎ出す。
作品では、空間が記憶している「そこにかつて存在し、今は消えたものたちの見えない存在感」を浮かび上がらせることに注目している。制作にあたっては、場所への敬意を大切にし、自然環境をできる限り損なわないよう努めており、展示終了後には痕跡を残さないよう心がけるなど、自然に寄り添った制作姿勢を大切にしている。
近年は、廃棄された釣り糸を用い、絶滅の危機にある動物たちをテーマにした作品にも取り組んでいる。
彼女は美術館やギャラリーといった屋内展示にとどまらず、廃工場や歴史的遺跡、山や海辺など、さまざまな開かれた場所で制作を行ってきた。これまでに8か国、53の都市を訪れ、130回を超える展覧会に参加している。最近では、2024年にソウルのオルタナティブ・アートスペース「イポ」にて、第10回個展「明日への挨拶（내일의 안부）」を開催した。
Chung Hye-Ryung is a visual artist who explores space and materiality through site-specific installations using discarded materials found on location. By staying on-site, she uncovers stories rooted in each place. Her work reveals the unseen presence of what once existed—traces held in the memory of the space. Her practice reflects deep respect for place and follows an eco-friendly approach that minimizes impact and leaves no trace after the exhibition.
Recently, she has used discarded fishing lines to work about the extinction and disappearance of animal species. Her work goes beyond galleries to abandoned factories, heritage sites, mountains, and coastlines. She has visited 53 cities in 8 countries and participated in over 130 exhibitions. In 2024, she held her 10th solo show, “How Are You, Tomorrow”, at Alternative Art Space IPO in Seoul.
